Schappell builds a great character, especially in Heather Chase. Schappell reminds us that we don't have to look far afield for exotic, complex, hilarious and tragic stories—her rendering of women's inner lives is fresh and necessary. She is a great choice as a reader for this book. You know these women, right down to the way they like their coffee.

These stories so brilliantly convey the connection between the adolescent self and the adult self. Do people really change from 20 to 40? Special order, subject to availability. You know these women, right down to the way they like their coffee. The story veers from what, at first, seems like a traditional coming-of-age rite of passage — the passing down of menus from any mother to any daughter — to a dark tale of manipulation, guilt, lack of gratitude, and hidden angers. Manufacturers, suppliers and others provide what you see here, and we have not verified it.

Her audiobook credits include romance, supernatural thrillers, young adult and adult fiction. And then she starts fulfilling those assumptions. Until I hit a typo, and I was wrestled out of the prose dream and went back to the text unfocused: Where was I again? This, combined with the energy of the writing and the dark wit of these characters, will endear the book to Schappell's audience and fans of Lorrie Moore and Maile Meloy. She is a great choice as a reader for this book. In revealing all their vulnerabilities and twisting our preconceived notions of who they are, Elissa Schappell alters how we think about the nature of female identity and how it evolves.
